Intel vs Samsung: The fight for Domination
Introduction:
In the second half of the 20th century when
semiconductors were developed for the first time, the number of companies
involved in the production of semiconductors were handful in numbers. Fairchild
electronics, Texas instruments were the first companies to produce the
semiconductors. Intel was also one of the early manufacturers of
semiconductors. Since the establishment of Intel it has dominated the
semiconductor industry. Many companies have given tough competition to Intel
over the years, and some of them have also snatched the crown from Intel for
some years. From all these competitors, Samsung is the most fierceful one and it has
given the toughest competition to Intel since its establishment. But according
to semiconductor rankings 2020,
Intel has defended its top position, forcing Samsung to settle for the second
position.
Intel vs Samsung: A comparison of two rivals
Intel has secured the top spot in the semiconductor
market in 2020, but that doesn’t mean that it will be an easy job for them to
do so in upcoming years. The semiconductor market is getting competitive day by
day and Samsung is throwing some harsh curveballs towards Intel. Below is the
comparison of the two rivals and their performance in the past few years.
Intel: Intel is an American Semiconductor Company. In 2019, the semiconductor sales of the Intel was $70.79 Billions which increased by 4% in 2020 resulting in annual semiconductor sales of $73.89 Billions. Because of this growth in sales, Intel has managed to retain its top spot in 2020 too.
Samsung: Samsung Inc. is a South Korean Company. Though, Samsung is the world’s largest chipmaker, because of which they have been able to reach the top spot in the semiconductor industry. But as the demand for the memory chips fell in 2019 as well as in 2020, they lost their top spot to Intel and had to settle for the second position. In 2019, the semiconductor sales of the Samsung was $55.7 Billions which increased by 9% in 2020 resulting in annual semiconductor saled of $60.4 Billions.
Analysis of the performance of the two rivals:
Both the companies have witnessed positive growth in
2020 as compared to 2019. Though almost every industry was affected by 2020
which caused fall in demand, the semiconductor industry flourished as the
demand for electronic and tech products surged during the pandemic. The growth
rate in sales of Samsung is more than Intel which shows that Samsung still has
the potential and efficiency to overthrow Intel from the top spot. Other top
semiconductor companies such as TSMC, Sk hynix also witnessed growth in the
sales but they are way behind as compared to intel and samsung. This is the
reason Samsung and Intel are the Arch Rivals in the Semiconductor Industry as
of now.
